"Beth, The White Guardian"
Costume Facts

Costume Completion:
  • Over two (2) years from inception - planning - for construction - to completion of the "Beth, The White Guardian" costume.

Costume Application:
  • Took nearly eight (8) hours to apply the costume.   Because over 90% of the costume was Jean's own body, covered with five (5) containers of white, Ben-Nye makeup.
  • Each container of Ben-Nye makeup cost $10.00, for a total of $50.00 for each costume application.

Costume Details:
  • Four (4) long white wigs were used for the construction of the costume:
    • Two (2) wigs for the head/mane;
    • One (1) wig for the tail;
    • One (1) wig for the leg feathering.
  • The Beth mask's mouth moved when Jean talked.
  • The Beth mask's teeth were made from real denture material.
  • Jean could drink with the assistance of a long straw while wearing the Beth mask.

Costume Dangers:
  • Falling, while wearing the unguligrade leg appliances was the number one concern for Jean's safety.  One wrong step or move might snap, or permanently injure, Jean's ankles.  Jean was actually walking on the balls of her feet, nearly on tip-toe, while wearing the unguligrade leg appliances.  This was the primary reason for the pre-costume routine, to help strenghten Jean's legs and ankles.
  • There was also the concern that someone (a child) might pull on Beth's tail, causing Jean to lose her balance and fall.   That's why Beth needed a constant bodyguard--a greeter to help deflect problems before they occurred.

Pre Costume Routine:
  • Three (3) months of private dance lessons to learn coordination and balance for wearing the costume's unguligrade leg appliances.
  • One (1) month of private martial arts instruction to learn how to fall correctly without breaking her ankles, or any other part of her body while wearing the digigrade leg appliances.
  • Twelve (12) months [three (3) days a week] of intensive exercises to strengthen her body [especially her legs and ankles] for the stress of wearing the unguligrade leg appliances.

Costume Cost:
  • Total cost for the "Beth, The White Guardian" costume was over six thousand dollars ($6,000.00):
    • Seven (7) round trip air-fares ($2,800.00) from Orlando, Florida to California:
      • One (1) roundtrip ticket to San Diego where I met Ed Kline and discussed the possibility of a "Beth, The White Guardian" costume.
      • Two (2) roundtrip tickets to Fresno for preliminary mold and cast work, for the costume's mask, hands and unguligrade leg appliances, at Ed Kline's personal studio.
      • Two (2) roundtrip tickets to Los Angeles for test and adjust.
      • Two (2) roundtrip tickets to Fresno to pickup of the nearly completed costume.
    • Ed Kline's unique and artistic services = $2,500.00
    • Material for the three (3) outfits and robe = $450.00
    • Additional material and services = $250.00
